Where's the best place you've ever stayed?
Best place I have ever stayed - so far.... a beautiful over-water villa in Meeru Island in the Maldives - it's my very favourite piece of paradise in the world, even better I got to share it with my favourite person in the world - it was my third visit there, having previously met my partner there 6 years before, so it was our return visit as a couple - I loved "sharing" our villa with the many fish who lived underneath, including a very cute 2 cm long green spotted Boxfish under our stairs leading into the lagoon. The Maldives are truly unique and special - one night we even saw the electric blue bio-luminescence sparkling like bright blue stars in the water - like something out of a fairy tale or sci-fi movie - we even left bright blue footsteps on the beach as we walked back to our villa.
What's your oddest travel moment?
I am a very keen skier and we had arranged a trip to Austria to ski in the Saalbach area - day 2 in one of my favourite resorts Saalbach/Hinterglemm - a fabulous blue sky day - lots of sun and great snow. In the evening we retired to the spa for some relaxation.... some very slippery floors resulted in a broken arm for me and several trips to the hospital on a daily basis thereafter. All my colleagues and "friends" thought it very funny - it's normal to injure yourself on a ski trip yes? not really the spas are much more dangerous.....I much prefer the slippery snowy slopes
Have you had a perfect travel moment?
Hard to choose but one of my favourite moments is a hot air balloon safari in the resort of Sun City, South Africa - the experience of getting up in dead of night, wrapped up in woollen blankets to keep out the African night chill - waking up sleeping lions with our spotlights as we made our way to rendezvous with our pilot, was a prelude to our majestic take off, timed perfectly to rise with the sun over mist-shrouded lakes to gaze in wonder at the beautiful scene of hippos, wildebeest and zebras below - after landing we were whisked off for a champagne breakfast at a nearby luxury lodge, where we were treated to a couple of giraffes also having their "breakfast" at the salt lick.
What are your suitcase essentials?
are my mobile phone - keeping in touch, camera app & my listening books app - great for relaxation/getting to sleep on long flights, also sunscreen & mosquito repellent with antihistamines.
Where's next on your wishlist?
This list seems to grow and grow... but right at the top has to be JAPAN - I am so intrigued by the amazing history, culture with the mix of ancient and modern - from the bullet train and fast pace of life in Tokyo, to the beautiful ancient city of Kyoto, temples and onsen. If money was no object I would love to go back to St Lucia and stay at Jade Mountain. We had a wonderful tour of the hotel whilst on holiday recently - it was truly spectacular and in the most beautiful part of the island with a jaw-dropping view of the UNESCO world heritage site of the Pitons - this hotel could be straight out of a James Bond movie - it has been voted number 1 resort in the Caribbean and has consistently been rated in the top 5 in the world.
