Where's the best place you've ever stayed?
My favourite stay was at the Secrets hotel in Papagayo, Costa Rica. My partner arranged for us to stay there as it was our day off and we’d both been working really hard. As we arrived to check in, the sun was going down over the Pacific Ocean and the views were stunning. All of the rooms were set out like little bungalows along the hillside and looked directly out onto the calming waves. The next morning, I woke up and sat on the balcony watching the fishermen heading out to catch their day’s work. I heard a roaring sound and turned around to see a family of howler monkeys in the trees nearby. Later in the day, the staff at the pool remembered our names as they delivered signature cocktails to our sun beds. We felt like celebrities, and so totally chilled that we didn’t want to leave
What's your oddest travel moment?
I was in Thailand and signed myself up for a trek in the beautiful mountains of Chiang Mai to visit the tribes that reside there. My friend was chatting away to another couple, so I decided to take lots of photos of the scenery. I turned my attention to the wildlife and looked forward to showing my friends when I got home. I showed my Nan the snaps, and looking one photo she asked, 'who took this?’, sounding a bit concerned. It only turned out that I had taken a picture of a venomous funnel web spider with my hands about a foot away from it. Talk about a lucky escape!
Have you had a perfect travel moment?
My ‘wow’ travel moment happened totally out of the blue. I was on a rickety night bus in Vietnam back in my backpacking days and with the roads being quite bumpy, I couldn’t sleep. I was looking out of the window straight onto the ocean and was overwhelmed as it looked like an upside down sky full of stars - it was spectacular. When I looked closer, I could see that the sparkling light was from fishermen sitting in boats and the light was from the lamps they had as it was totally pitch black. What I saw was totally unique and took completely my breath away...
What are your suitcase essentials?
A pair of shades, a good crime novel and my electric toothbrush. Not to mention the tons of chocolate I stock up on at the airport, total guilty pleasure!
Where's next on your wishlist?
Argentina for the steak and wine, the Deep South in America for the music, and Canada to explore the lakes and get back to nature!
