Where's the best place you've ever stayed?
This would have to be Danum Valley Rainforest Lodge in Sabah, Borneo. I rarely want to see the same place twice, just because there are so many places to see in the world, but this would be one of those places. The Lodge is stunning and set within dense jungle, 3 hours inland from the main town of Lahad Datu. One of the highlights at the Lodge has to be the spectacular Canopy Walk where you get to walk up close and personal with some of the most stunning gentle giants within the rainforest. The Danum river cuts right through the jungle and the Lodge is perched on the banks giving you an extremely unique perspective on the rainforest. We were lucky to have a Deluxe River View Chalet featuring a bathtub on the veranda. Seeing hornbills flying past during dusk was truly memorable as was the fireflies at night and Orang Utans by day.
What's your oddest travel moment?
We had booked ourselves onto the Ubud River White Water rafting trip which we were extremely excited about. The journey started well, and we were accompanied by a father and his young son along with a very enthusiastic tour guide. Half way down the river, the rapids started to get a little bigger and as we hit one of the boulders, I got bumped off my seat and fell backwards and landed smack in the middle of a row of seats. As I had my life jacket on, I became wedged in between with my legs and arms sticking high up in the air. It was one of the most embarrassing but equally hilarious, moments of my life, as I desperately struggled to un-wedge myself. After quite a few humiliating minutes, I managed to free myself with the help of the others. Everyone was in hysterics especially our tour guide who literally couldn't stop laughing.
Have you had a perfect travel moment?
Seeing a whale in the Pacific Ocean whilst driving up the California Coast in our convertible Mustang was a perfect travel moment for my husband and I. We had been desperate to see one and were always on the lookout but as we got closer to San Francisco, we felt this would never happen. Just north of the Big Sur, my husband spotted something in the ocean and we managed to pull over in a stunning layby surrounded by wild flowers. It was indeed a whale swimming very fast up the coast which was just incredible and perfect timing.
What are your suitcase essentials?
I never leave for a holiday without my camera for taking those all-important shots. A trusty guide book is also an essential item in understanding the destination and truly getting the most out of the trip and location.
Where's next on your wishlist?
This is certainly a hard question as there are so many places to list but I would love to get to Australia as I have been selling it for many years. Having the chance to experience it first-hand would be truly wonderful. Other places on my wish list have to be Brazil to see the Iguazu Falls as well as the Cherry Blossoms of Japan.
"We found the whole experience of booking our honeymoon with Kuoni pleasurable. We choose to go to Indonesia and we were so lucky to have Hannah Yapp (Assistant Manager of Bristol branch) deal with our request. Not only was she knowledgeable and experienced in Asian holidays she was able to personally recommend areas and accommodation and tailor make our perfect honeymoon. I would highly recommend!"
