Where's the best place you've ever stayed?
Two special places which come to mind could not be more contrasting. The stunning 360 degree view from our roomy suite on the 60th floor of the heaving, twinkling metropolis known as Lebua at State Tower, Bangkok literally took my breath away. The chocolate coloured Chao Phraya River snaked below into the distance inviting us to explore the iconic landmarks on its banks. No less impressive would have to be a balmy night spent sleeping under the stars on the banks of the majestic River Colorado in Arizona. It would be hard to find a more breathtaking place to wake up surrounded by striking sandstone rock formations.
What's your oddest travel moment?
One of my oddest travel moments so far must be eating supper in the fusion restaurant SuperTree by IndoChine perched 58m up on the top of a super tree at Singapore’s Gardens at the Bay. Looking at them from the ground they do not look big enough to house anything, let alone a restaurant, but as you enter through a tiny lift you are magically transported away from the crowds on the ground to experience phenomenal views of the Singapore skyline and enjoy a unique view of the famous light and sound spectacular unfolding below.
Have you had a perfect travel moment?
It would have to be on a camping and trekking tour of Hawaii's Big Island. It was the ideal opportunity to get off the usual tourist track and discover the real Hawaii with its stunning natural beauty and vibrant culture. Visiting during the recent eruption of Kilauea made this experience all the more memorable, even if it did disrupt our intended itinerary! How could I ever forget a birds-eye view of the ever-consuming lava flow across the Leilani Estates, as seen from an exhilarating helicopter flight? Staying in remote and primitive ocean-side campsites provided the perfect backdrop for witnessing Honu, the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, often seen sunbathing on the volcanic black-sand beaches. A particular highlight for me was a night-time encounter, off the Kona Coast, when I overcame my fear of snorkelling and got up close and personal with gigantic Mantarays!
What are your suitcase essentials?
My go-to items include a memory foam travel pillow which compresses into a tiny ball in my hand luggage and definitely makes sleep more comfortable on long flights and transfers. A portable battery pack gives me instant charge for my electronic devices whilst on the move and a waterproof phone case means I never miss a photo opportunity. I’d also never go anywhere without a travel guide book and am gathering quite a collection!
Where's next on your wishlist?
Having already explored a few countries in Southeast Asia, I am itching to venture further across the region, with Vietnam, Indonesia and The Philippines all at the top of my list. I have also always wanted to explore the diverse arid landscapes and wildlife found in Namibia, and as a keen geographer I would love to travel to New Zealand and witness its epic glacial landforms
